Manuel Antonio National Park & Beaches from San José
Tour # 161
Departing from: San José and Surroundings
Costa Rica Tours
For an unforgettable trip to a national park considered one of the most beautiful in Costa Rica – despite being relatively small – we’ll get an early start, taking the Central Pacific beach route untill we reach Manuel Antonio National Park. With its 683 hectares of protected area and some of the most impressive scenery in all Costa Rica – white sand beaches and verdant green foliage in the midst of imposing mountains – Manuel Antonio lies in the tropical rainforest life zone and protects patches of primary and secondary forest, mangroves, beach vegetation, marine habitats, islands and a 14 – hectare lagoon.
Our route winds through the mountains of Monte del Aguacate from where we can glimpse majestic views of the entire Central Valley and the Pacific Ocean. In addition, we will also have a chance to pass through picturesque towns such as Atenas, Orotina and San Mateo.
When we reach the bridge over the Tárcoles River, we’ll make a short stop to check out huge crocodiles sunning themselves on the riverbanks. The males of theses impressive prehistoric creatures can average up to 5 meters in length, while females normally reach 4 meters. Theses crocodiles often spend their time soaking up the sun on the banks of the Tárcoles River; water levels and temperatures, the distance to the water, available shade and the time of day are important factors for determining how long they spend in the sun, the shade or the water.
Our journey continues toward Manuel Antonio National Park along the scenic Southern Coastal Highway through African palm plantations and several towns dotting the Pacific Coast, until reaching the port of Quepos. Here bananas used to be shipped off for export; today the port serves fishermen. From here it’s a short hop to the park entrance.
Upon arrival we will take a walk along trails to look at the park’s flora and fauna. Some of the most outstanding fauna includes raccoons, coatimundis, agoutis, two-toed sloths, capuchin monkeys, large cats and the park’s endangered endemic subspecies of squirrel monkeys. There are also abundant marine animals such as moray eels, manta rays, anglefish, sea urchins and sartfish.
After the walk, our guide will take us to one of the most beautiful while sand beaches in the national park, where we’ll have plenty of time to bathe in the crystalline waters or simply soak up the sun.
Includes. Transportation, professional guide, park entrance fee, light breakfast and lunch.
